The city of Setúbal, south of Lisbon, is the gateway to the Tróia Peninsula by ferry and a fine city in its own right.
The main attraction in Setúbal is the historic Igreja de Jesus, designed by Diogo de Boitaca (whose other work includes the Mosteiro dos Jerónimos in Belém) this incredibly decorative church was completed in 1491 and is known as the first Manueline building in Portugal.
Setúbal is a pleasant place to visit and has a number of other interesting churches and museums, such as the excellent Museu do Trabalho Michel Giacometti (admission free), the Casa da Baía and the Pelourinho de Setubal (Pillory).
Azeitão is a doable day trip from Setúbal by bus from outside Setúbal railway station.
There are several good places to stay in town. Most of the main places to stay are close to the main station including the recommended four star Meliá Setúbal Hotel, the Hotel Arangues, three stars and the four star Luna Esperanca Centro Hotel.
