The magnificent Igreja de Jesus in Setúbal is the city's most famous attraction.
History
Designed by Diogo de Boitaca (whose other work includes the Mosteiro dos Jerónimos in Belém) this incredibly decorative church was completed in 1491 and is known as the first Manueline building in Portugal.
The high altar is surrounded by superb examples of classic Portuguese blue and white azulejos tiles. The nearby Galeria da Pintura Quinhentista (admission free) displays many of the treasures of the Igreja de Jesus.

From Setúbal Station it is about a 20 minute walk to the church. Walk west out of the station past the soccer stadium, Bonfim Stadium (Estádio do Bonfim), south through the pleasant Jardim do Bonfim park and then continue heading south until you see the church on your right.

The church is within easy walking distance of Praça do Bocage with the Câmara Municipal de Setúbal and the lovely Igreja de São Julião. It is also close to Casa da Baía and the Pelourinho de Setubal (Pillory).
