This branch of McDonald's just off Avenida dos Aliados in downtown Porto opened in 1995 in the former Imperial Café. The original cafe dates from the 1930s. Its original decorations including the art deco stained glass and eagle emblem have all been retained.
Café Santa Cruz Coimbra
Next door to the Igreja de Santa Cruz (Monastery of Santa Cruz) in Coimbra is the superb Cafe Santa Cruz set in a former chapel of the monastery. The cafe retains the original vaulted Manueline ceiling and stained-glass.
Enjoy a Portuguese pastry and coffee on the marble tables while you admire the ornate wood paneling. The cafe is a meeting place for artists, journalists, writers, and also supporters of local football team, União de Coimbra.
A Ginjinha Bar
A Ginjinha Bar (aka A Ginjinha Espiñeira) in Largo São Domingos is a short walk from nearby Rossio Station and a Lisbon institution. It serves shots of a popular Portuguese cherry liquor made from sour cherries.
Ginjinha aka Licor de Ginja or ginja is a Portuguese cherry liquor made by infusing ginja berries (sour cherries) in aguardente. The latter is a strong alcoholic beverage with between 29 and 60% alcohol content found in both Portugal and Spain.
Sugar, water, and other ingredients such as cinnamon are then commonly added.
Café Majestic
Café Majestic on the fashionable shopping street of Rua de Santa Catarina, in Porto first opened its doors in 1921. It quickly became a popular meeting place for the city's cultural and intellectual elite. It was designed in the Belle Époque style, characterized by its ornate and luxurious decor, with elements of Art Nouveau and Art Deco.
Café Guarany
Café Guarany dates from 1933. It is situated on the ground floor of the classic Hotel Aliados on Avenida dos Aliados in central Porto. The cafe has architecture by Rogério de Azevedo and sculpture by Henrique Moreira. The interior has a South American Indian theme, a reference to the coffee growing countries that fueled Porto's coffee boom back in the day. Café Guarany serves full meals and is also a venue for live music (fado and Cuban) and other events.
A Brasileira
Café A Brasileira on Rua Garrett in the Chiado district of Lisbon is known for its rich cultural heritage and its role in the intellectual and artistic life of the city. A Brasileira was founded in 1905 by Adriano Telles, a Portuguese businessman. It opened to serve Brazilian coffee - hence the name which means "Brazilian lady" or "Brazilian cafe". It is thought the bica - an expresso-style coffee was first served here.
The cafe became a hang out for artists, intellectuals and writers which helped to spread its popularity. A seated statue of the poet Fernando Pessoa by sculptor Lagoa Henriques sits at a table outside the cafe.

Café Nicola in Rossio Square (Praça Dom Pedro IV) in the Baixa district of Lisbon has a rich tradition of serving coffee, pastries, and light meals to both Lisbon locals and foreign tourists alike. Pastéis de Belém, Belém, Lisbon
The historic Pastéis de Belém in the Belém district west of central Lisbon may well be the country's most famous cafe. It is renowned for producing one of Portugal's most well-known and beloved pastries, known as Pastéis de Nata or custard tarts. The elegant interior of Pastéis de Belém is tiled with some beautiful blue and white azulejos. You can buy to take away or sit down and enjoy the pastries in the spacious cafe interior. As well as the signature Pastéis de Nata other delicacies on sale include Bolo Ingles, Bolo Rainha, Salgados, Sortido and Bolo Rei (over the Christmas period).
