History
The first Quiosque de Refresco opened in Rossio Square in 1869 with another opening soon after on Avenida da Liberdade. Initially places for workers to enjoy a beer or glass of wine, they expanded to include snacks and other light refreshments. At one time there were around a hundred of kiosks in Lisbon done in different designs and colors.
After becoming popular with all classes of society, the kiosks fell out of fashion between the 1930s and 1970s, due in part to Salazar-era laws that discouraged public gatherings and intellectual debate. However, beginning in 2009, several have subsequently been refurbished and there are now over 50 in the greater Lisbon area.
