Linha de Cascais

Trains from Cais do Sodré Station in central Lisbon run along the north bank of the River Tagus on the Linha de Cascais to the resort towns of Estoril and Cascais.

There are stations on the Linha de Cascais at Santos, Alcântara-Mar, Belém, Algés, Cruz-Quebrada, Caxias, Paço de Arcos, Santo Amaro, Oeiras, Carcavelos, Parade, S. Pedro, S. João, Estoril, Monte Estoril and Cascais.

The journey from Cais do Sodre Station takes 30-40 minutes depending on the type of train and can be ridden with the Viva Viagem card.

The first trains depart Cascais and Cais do Sodre stations at 5.30am with the last train from both stations at 1.30am. The Cascais train stops only at Alcântara-Mar and Algés. The Oeiras train stops at all stations from Cais do Sodre to Oeiras. between 5.30am-6.50am and after 9pm the Cascais train stops at all stations. Trains run roughly every 10-12 minutes until 9pm after which time they are less frequent. Care should be taken on late night trains and passengers should avoid sitting in empty carriages to avoid any chance of theft. Trains are perfectly safe during the day.

Bicycles can be taken on the train for free.


In Oeiras the River Tagus officially becomes the Atlantic Ocean and there is a beach and pool. The 18th century Palácio dos Marqueses de Pombal is the former home of Pombal and now a museum with lovely grounds. The museum is free on Sundays.


Carcavelos is the next stop and its long, sandby beach draws surfers and windsurfers throughout the year. On Thursdays the town hosts a large market.

Cascais Station

Cascais Station is the terminus of the Linha de Cascais from Cais do Sodre. The station is also the starting point for local buses. Cascais Station has a currency exchange, a cafe, shoe repair and key copy store and toilets.
