Portugal Maps: Tomar Map
The city of Tomar, north of Lisbon, is situated on the River Nabão. The main attraction in Tomar is the historic Convento de Cristo, the base of the Order of the Knights Templar, with construction beginning in the early 12th century and continuing until the 16th century.
Tomar is a pleasant place to visit and has a number of other interesting churches and museums, such as the unusual Museu dos Fósforos (Matchbox Museum).
Fatima is a doable day trip from Tomar by bus from outside Tomar railway station.
There are several good places to stay in town. Most of the main places to stay are on Rua Silva Pinto and the parallel street Rua Alexandre Herculano. Residencial Cavaleiros de Cristo, Residencial Uniao, Hotel Sinagoga and Residencial Luz are all recommended. Hostel 2300 Thomar is a hostel catering to budget travellers and backpackers. The most upmarket hotel in Tomar is the four star Hotel Dos Templarios complete with swimming pool.
