The city of Caldas da Rainha, north of Lisbon near the Atlantic coast, is a genteel spa town and center of ceramics production inspired by Rafael Bordalo Pinheiro (1846-1905).
Things to see in the town are the daily market in Praça da República, the historic Hospital Termal Rainha D. Leonor, established by Queen Leonor in the late 15th century and the pleasant Parque Dom Carlos I, a lovely green space with the Museu de José Malhoa, one of the town's nine museums of note, within the park.
Other museums include the Museu de Cerâmica, the Museu do Hospital e das Caldas da Rainha and the Atelier-Museu João Fragoso.
The standout church is Nossa Senhora do Pópulo near the spa, which is classified as a National Monument. Built in the 15th century it was the chapel of the Hospital Termal Rainha D. Leonor and has elements of Manueline architecture.
