Aveiro Map

Aveiro is a pleasant seaside resort on the Costa de Prata on the Atlantic coast directly south of Porto and west of Viseu.
The town is labeled the "Venice of Portugal" for its location on a salty lagoon and its many canals.

Aveiro is known for water whether that is its many canals plied by the town's colorful moliceiros or its windy beaches, ideal for surfing, though rather cold, even in summer for swimming.
Places of interest in the town itself are the Museu de Aveiro, a former convent founded in 1458 and located on Rua Miguel Bombarda, Aveiro Cathedral (Sé de Aveiro) a former Dominican monastery. It contains an original Gothic, Manueline stone cross preserved as a national monument.
Several Art Nouveau buildings in Aveiro deserve a visit: these include the turismo (Tourist Office), the Museu Arte Nova and the Aveiro City Museum in another Art Nouveau building with an eclectic collection of exhibits on Aveiro's history and cultural heritage.
Churches in Aveiro include the 17th century Igreja da Misericórdia noted for its gilded wood carvings and 18th century pipe organ as well as the Igreja da Vera Cruz with striking 20th century azulejos tiling.
Aveiro Station has trains to and from both Lisbon and Porto. Trains from Gare do Oriente in Lisbon run to Aveiro via Coimbra B approximately every hour and take about 2 hours.
From Campanhã Station in Porto, trains to Aveiro run approximately 2 or 3 times an hour. The fastest Alfa Pendular trains take just over 30 minutes. Urbano (local) trains from Aveiro go as far as São Bento Station in Porto. These trains take an hour and six minutes stopping at Cacia, Canelas, Salreu, Estarreja, Avanca, Valega, Ovar, Cortegaca, Esmoriz, Espinho, Granja, Valadares, Vila Nova de Gaia-Devesas, General Torres and Campanha before arriving at São Bento.
Accommodation
Aveiro has a number of good hotel options. The three star Veneza Hotel, just off the main road that runs down from Aveiro Station is one of the best mid-price range hotels in the town. Hotel As Americas is four star with a range of facilities including free Wifi and free parking. Hotel Aveiro Palace is also four star and centrally located near the main canal. The three star Hotel das Salinas offers views of the Art Nouveau houses and traditional Moliceiro boats from its rooms. Aveiro Mizu is a good value small hotel at Rua de São Roque 13. Hotel Aveiro Center is a quiet centrally-located three star hotel. Hotel Imperial, on Dr. Nascimento Leitão, is a similarly-priced three star accommodation. For those on a budget, the parque de campismo (234 369 425) at Barra and Gafanha da Nazare (234 366 565) northwest of Ilhavo are both reasonable and close to town. For those who prefer a roof, the pousada da juventude (234 420 536, fax 234 382 395) which is 1.5 km south of town is good value for a double, or for a multiple. Reservations strongly recommended.
