Aveiro Cathedral

Aveiro Cathedral (Sé de Aveiro) in Aveiro is located opposite the city's main tourist attraction, the Museu de Aveiro. It was founded in 1423 making it the oldest religious institution in the city, though little remains from this time. The church we see today as known as the Igreja Paroquial de Nossa Senhora da Glória was constructed in the 18th century.

History

The cathedral (aka Igreja de São Domingos) is the former Dominican monastery while what is now the Aveiro Museum was the Dominican convent.

The cathedral contains a Manueline style stone cross of São Domingos which is classified as a national monument.

The entrance to the white limestone cathedral is particularly striking. The tall bell tower next to the building also adds an elegance to the building.

The white-washed interior is largely-understated in decoration, though very light under the vaulted ceiling.

The interior of the church has a number of arched side chapels decorated in azulejos tile work and stone carving from different periods of Portuguese history.
