Tomar Station (Estação Ferroviária de Tomar)
Tomar Station in Tomar is one end of the rail route from Lisbon.
Along with the adjacent bus station it is the main point of public transport access to this historic city associated with the Knights Templar.
History
The station dates from 1928 and is constructed in the style of austere architecture typical of the Estado Novo period of Portuguese history.
Trains From Tomar Station
There are direct trains to Tomar from Lisbon's Gare do Oriente Station which take from 90 minutes to 2 hours depending on the train.
Some trains may involve a change at Entroncamento. If travelling north to Coimbra Station in Coimbra or Campanhã Station in Porto, you will need to change trains at Lamarosa or Entroncamento. There are also frequent trains to Santarém (50 minutes).
Buses From Tomar Station
Buses also leave from the bus station (Rodoviária de Tomar) adjacent to Tomar Station for a variety of destinations.
These services include long-distance buses to Lisbon, Aveiro (3 hours, 35 minutes), Caldas da Rainha (2 hours, 25 minutes), Coimbra (2 hours, 5 minutes), Evora (3 hours, 30 minutes), and Torres Vedras (3 hours, 20 minutes).
There are also more local buses for Abrantes (30 minutes), Fatima (40 minutes) and Leiria (1 hour, 10 minutes).
Tomar is small enough to get around on foot. However there are two circular bus routes beginning at the bus station. These are the Linha Azul (Blue Line) and Linha Verde (Green Line). Both loop buses stop at the town's hospital, stadium and library.
There are few facilities at Tomar Station except for a waiting room, public telephones and a number of cafes nearby.
The interesting Museu dos Fósforos (Matchbox Museum) is just a short walk away. The nearest hotels to Tomar Station are the two-star Hotel Trovador and Thomar House.
Nearby Hotels
There are several good places to stay in town. Most of the main places to stay are on Rua Silva Pinto and the parallel street Rua Alexandre Herculano.
Residencial Cavaleiros de Cristo, Residencial Uniao, Hotel Sinagoga and Residencial Luz are all recommended. Hostel 2300 Thomar is a hostel catering to budget travellers and backpackers. The most upmarket hotel in Tomar is the four star Hotel Dos Templarios complete with swimming pool.
