Roughly 30 km west of Albufeira on the Algarve, Carvoeiro is a resort of long standing, having developed from a fishing village in the 1960s.

Around 3,000 live in the town year round though the population rises in the summer months as visitors arrive from all over Portugal and overseas.

Attractions include the Forte de Nossa Senhora da Encarnação, the town's main beach, Praia de Carvoeiro and Farol de Alfanzina, an impressive lighthouse from where there are excellent views out to sea..

Faro is 60 km east on the A22 (50 minutes). São Bartolomeu de Messines is 30 minutes north by car on the N124. Lagos is 31 km (40 minutes) west on the A125 or drive 40 km on the A22 which is slightly quicker in terms of time.

Accommodation in Carvoeiro is abundant and a mix of top end resorts plus rental homes, villas and apartments.

Some recommended places to stay are Quinta do Paraíso, Monte Santo Resort, both firmly at the top end of the scale with large pools and restaurants, ideal for a family holiday.

The Carvoeiro Hotel is 10 minutes from the beach and has a pool, garden, restaurant and bar. Also recommended is Hello Villas with an outdoor pool and a children's pool in a garden setting.
