Sand City Lagoa
Sand City Lagoa bills itself as the biggest sand sculpture park in the world. A fun attraction, it competes with several nearby water parks in the Algarve region for the family Euro.
Within easy reach of Portimão and the beach resorts of Praia da Rocha, Ferragudo and Carvoeiro, Sand City Lagoa is a fun day out for all age groups.
What to See
Over 60 artists have created over 100 sand sculptures on the pleasant 6 hectare site.
The sculptures depict both people and buildings and range from contemporary anime characters to pop stars to Greek gods. Cristiano Ronaldo makes an appearance, of course, along with fellow royalty, Queen Elizabeth II. London's Ben Ben, the Egyptian Pyramids, and the Eiffel Tower in Paris have also all been lovingly recreated in sand.
Visitors can view the sculptures from the comfort of an electric golf buggy or simply walk.
At night the sculptures are illuminated in a breath-taking lightshow.
There is a bar/restaurant on site - Sandy Bar - for light refreshments and a large sand pit where kids can try their hand at building sandcastles.

From Albufeira, Sand City is about 30 km by car and roughly a 30 minute drive. Silves is just 15 minutes to the north on the N124-1. The Slide & Splash water park is just 5 km down the road to the west.
Accommodation in Carvoeiro
Accommodation in Carvoeiro is abundant and a mix of top end resorts plus rental homes, villas and apartments.
Some recommended places to stay are Quinta do Paraíso, Monte Santo Resort, both firmly at the top end of the scale with large pools and restaurants, ideal for a family holiday.
The Carvoeiro Hotel is 10 minutes from the beach and has a pool, garden, restaurant and bar. Also recommended is Hello Villas with an outdoor pool and a children's pool in a garden setting.
