Slide & Splash in Lagoa near Portimão and the beach resorts of Praia da Rocha, Ferragudo and Carvoeiro has been providing aquatic family fun for over 30 years. Slide & Splash is the biggest water park in Portugal and one of the biggest in Europe. It offers a superb range of state-of-the-art slides, water chutes, and pools in addition to a variety of animal shows: falcons, reptiles and tropical birds. The kids will love spending the day playing on such amazing rides as the Tornado, Kamikaze, Big Wave, and the Black Hole. Aquashow

Aquashow between Quarteira and Loulé, west of Faro, is part theme park, part zoo. The whole complex is run by the Aquashow Park Hotel, a 4-star hotel on site. Attractions include the water park with numerous fun slides, chutes, a water roller coaster, as well as paddling and swimming pools. The Twin Space Shuttle, 17 meters high and 178m long was added in 2016 and the seriously vertical White Fall is an older favourite. The animal shows include sea lions, parrots, reptiles and birds of prey. Throw in several restaurants, a mini train and different amusement park rides and you have a pleasant day out for all the family. Book online for discounts. Aqualand Algarve

Aqualand Algarve, 15 km from Albufeira in Alcantarilha, has a variety of huge water slides and pools. Part of the Aspro Parks organization which has a number of attractions across Europe including five Aqualands in neighboring Spain and seven in France, Aqualand Algarve offers some high adrenaline fun with the highest slide in Portugal, the 36m Kamikaze, a large swimming pool and other water slides and chutes. Aqualand Algarve offers free car parking for visitors as well as free buses from a number of towns on The Algarve: Albufeira, Alvôr, Carvoeiro, Lagos, Montegordo, Portimão, Praia da Rocha, Quarteira, Tavira, and Vilamoura, among others. Aqualand is open from May to September.

Lagos Zoo is a fun day out for all the family, especially for those with young children. Lagos Zoo has a large collection of animals, plants and birds, set in a beautiful location, north west of Lagos town near Benzafrim on the A22. There are over 120 species of animals and over 200 species of plants, with a particularly diverse collection of primates including marmosets, gibbons, guenon, tamarin, siamang, and lemurs and birds: cockatoos, cranes, hornbills, kookaburras, pelicans, storks and more. There is a zoo for very small children up to six years old, picnic areas and a restaurant. Lagos Zoo is open all year round from April 1-September 30 (10 am-7 pm) and October 1-March 31 (10am-5pm).

Zoomarine is located in Guia about 7km north west of the resort of Albufeira, just of the N125 highway. Part theme park, part aquarium and part zoo, Zoomarine is another enjoyable excursion for families with children. The biggest attraction is the spectacular dolphin show but there are also sea lions, sharks, fairground rides, swimming pools, water slides, a beach, a wave pool, animal and bird shows, a 4D cinema and an aquarium. Krazy World

Krazy World near Algoz, north of Albufeira, east of Silves, is another part-zoo, part theme park Algarve attraction aimed at families with kids. There are camels, crocodiles, turtles, giant snakes and lizards, as well as a petting/feeding zoo with goats, sheep and chickens. There are also donkey rides, mini-golf, bouncy castles and pools for the little ones. Low key but a cheap and fun day/half-day out. May-August 10 am-6.30 pm; September-April 10 am-6 pm.
