Beaches in & around Lagos

Lagos has some of the very best beaches in the Algarve and, indeed, Portugal as a whole. Some of them are delightful small coves with tremendous rock formations popular with boat and kayak tours.

Meia Praia

Meia Praia is a large expanse of sand west of Lagos town centre altogether about 4 km in length. The popular beach is backed by restaurants and beach bars and there are stores offering a variety of water sports including sailboarding and water skiing. The beach can be reached by a short walk from Lagos Marina and Lagos train station.

Praia da Batata

Praia da Batata (Potato Beach) is on the opposite side of the river from Meia Praia and the closest beach to Lagos old town. Praia da Batata is the first of Lagos' small, cove beaches as the coastline runs to the south out in to the sea. There are parasols and sun beds for hire and a number of kiosks selling snacks and drinks. The historic Forte Ponta da Bandeira is a picturesque backdrop to this small beach. Praia do Pinhão is the next beach south before Praia da Dona Ana.

Praia da Dona Ana

Praia da Dona Ana is a popular beach resort reached by local bus and the Lagos tourist train. The beach is reached by a set of steep stairs from the headland above where the Carvi Beach Hotel and a number of other accommodation options are located. The beach is excellent for swimming and Praia da Dona Ana's rock formations receive visits throughout the day from sea kayaking tours. There's a restaurant on the beach, as well as beach parasols and sun beds, for hire. There is parking including reserved spots for disabled drivers on the headland.

Praia do Camilo

Praia do Camilo is an iconic Lagos beach with superb views from the headland and beautiful rock formations and cliffs in the small cove at the foot of the long set of stairs. Fully sheltered Praia do Camilo is an excellent swimming beach and the last stop on the sea kayak tours from town. A restaurant in the cliffs above the beach has lovely views.

Ponta da Piedade

Ponta da Piedade is the southernmost point of the coast directly south of Lagos before it curves west and the beach at Praia de Porto de Mós. There are superb views as far as Alvor, Carvoeiro and Portimão and a lighthouse. This is where the tourist train turns round to return to Lagos. There are restaurants and shops here.

Praia de Porto de Mós

Praia de Porto de Mós is a large sandy beach round the headland west of Praia dos Pinheiros and Praia da Balança. The beach is a long curving bay between two rocky cliffs.

Praia da Luz

Praia da Luz is 6 km west of Lagos and has grown into a small resort. Burgau is a further 5 km west. There are frequent buses connecting Lagos to Luz. The cliff track between Luz and Lagos (walk with care) takes about 2 hours.
