Located in the Alto Alentejo region of Portugal, Monsaraz is known for its well-preserved medieval architecture and its stunning panoramic views. Narrow cobblestone streets wind through whitewashed houses with traditional blue and yellow trim.

The village is dominated by its medieval castle (Castelo de Monsaraz), which offers visitors a glimpse into the area's history. The castle has been well-preserved and provides a great vantage point for taking in the surrounding landscape.

Nearby is the Alqueva Dam, which has created the largest artificial lake in Europe. From the village, you can enjoy breathtaking views of the Alqueva Lake and the surrounding countryside. In the vicinity of Monsaraz, there are several megalithic monuments, including menhirs and dolmens, that date back to prehistoric times.

The Alqueva region, where Monsaraz is located, is recognized as a Dark Sky Reserve. This designation means that the area has low light pollution, making it an excellent spot for stargazing. There are even initiatives in place to promote astronomy tourism in the region.

Visitors can enjoy traditional Alentejo dishes, such as migas (a dish made with bread, garlic, and olive oil) and regional wines.

The village is close to the border with Spain, approximately 220 km east of the capital Lisbon. It is best reached on the A2 and A6 highways from the capital.

Buses connect Lisbon to nearby town of Évora, from where local buses run to Monsaraz.
