Castro Marim is a small town in the southeastern corner of Portugal, close to the Spanish border and just north of Vila Real de Santo Antonio.

Nestled along the banks of the Guadiana River, which marks the border with Spain, Castro Marim has a long history dating back to before the Roman period in Portugal.

D. Afonso III built the medieval castle which is perched atop a hill. From its ramparts there is a view of surrounding countryside including salt flats, the Guadiana River and even as far as Spain.

Nearby Sapal Nature Reserve is is a biodiverse wetland area and a haven for birdwatching and wildlife enthusiasts. Covering approximately 2,000 hectares along the Guadiana River estuary, the reserve is renowned for its diverse habitats, including salt marshes, mudflats, lagoons, and freshwater ponds. These habitats provide crucial breeding and feeding grounds for numerous bird species, including migratory species such as flamingos, herons, egrets, and various species of ducks and waders.

The Church of Nossa Senhora dos Mártires (Church of Our Lady of the Martyrs) dates back to the 14th century and features a Gothic architectural style. It is renowned for its beautiful Manueline doorway, intricate azulejo tilework, and ornate altarpiece.

The Church of São Sebastião (Church of Saint Sebastian), within the castle walls, is dedicated to the patron saint of the town. It features a blend of architectural styles, including Manueline and Baroque elements.

Access - Getting There

The historic town is 36 km south of Alcoutim, 53 km east of Faro, and 25 km east of Tavira. The border with Spain formed by the River Guadiana is also close by as is the Spanish town of Ayamonte. The Ponte Internacional do Guadiana (Guadiana International Bridge) is a major road crossing to and from Spain to the north east of Castro Marim on the A22/A49 highway.
