Grândola is a small town in the Setúbal District of Portugal, within the Alentejo region. It holds historical significance in Portugal, particularly due to its association with the Carnation Revolution of 1974. This marked the end of the authoritarian Estado Novo regime and the beginning of democracy in Portugal.

The town gained widespread recognition when the song "Grândola, Vila Morena" by Zeca Afonso was broadcast on the radio as a signal to start the 1974 revolution. The lyrics of the song were symbolic and served as a code to mobilize key military units involved in the coup d'état. Today, the song is considered an anthem of the revolution and is deeply ingrained in Portuguese culture.

Access - Getting There

The town is 36 km south of Alcoutim, 53 km east of Faro, and 25 km east of Tavira. The border with Spain formed by the River Guadiana is also close by as is the Spanish town of Ayamonte.

There are buses from Grândola to Lisbon (Sete Rios; 1 hour, 45 minutes), Almada (1 hour, 30 minutes), Setubal (1 hour), Beja (70 minutes), Alcácer do Sal (30 minutes), Santiago do Cacém and Sines (55 minutes).
