Charming Castro Verde
Castro Verde, in the district of Beja is a small town of over 7,000 people in the Lower Alentejo (Baixa Alentejo) in south east Portugal.
The town's history dates back to pre-Roman times, but it gained prominence in the medieval period due to its association with the Battle of Ourique in 1139, a pivotal event in Portuguese history where the first King of Portugal, Afonso I, secured a decisive victory against Moorish forces.
History
This victory is symbolically linked to the establishment of the Portuguese nation, and the town commemorates this historical moment with the Royal Basilica of Castro Verde, a Baroque church adorned with intricate azulejos (ceramic tiles) that depict scenes from the battle.
The town like Beja, and Serpa, is now an agricultural hub for the surrounding expanses of open plains and rolling hills, a characteristic landscape of the Baixo Alentejo region, which support traditional agriculture, particularly wheat farming and livestock rearing.
Key attractions in Castro Verde include the Museu da Lucerna, which houses a unique collection of Roman oil lamps, and the traditional whitewashed houses that line its narrow streets.
The Royal Basilica of Castro Verde (Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Conceição) is an 18th century church built over an earlier church from the reign of King Sebastian. Further restorations began in 2019.
Other churches in and around the town include the Church of Nossa Senhora dos Remédios, the Ermida de São Sebastião de Almeirim and the Ermida de São Pedro das Cabeças near the site of the Battle of Ourique.
The Castro Verde Biosphere Reserve is characterized by extensive plains where natural grasslands (meadows) and fields of cereals predominate. The flat land has groves of old olive trees, more recent vineyards and sparse patches of other trees, such as Holm and Cork oaks. This steppe-like ecosystem is home to such animals and birds as Iberian Imperial Eagle, Wild Rabbit and very rarely the Iberian lynx (Lynx pardinus).
The surrounding countryside is also part of a Special Protection Area for birds, making it a popular destination for birdwatching, with species such as the great bustard and Montagu's harrier frequently sighted. Additionally, the Feira de Castro, an annual fair and festival dating back to medieval times, is one of the oldest cultural events in the region, showcasing local crafts, music, and gastronomy.
Entradas
The lovely village of Entradas is 15 km northeast of Castro Verde. It has a population of less than 600 people.
Almodôvar
Just over 20 km south of Castro Verde is Almodôvar. The small town with a population of over 7,000 people has a couple of small museums. These include the Museu Severo Portela, housed in the former prison with paintings by Severo Portela (1898-1985) and the Museu da Escrita do Sudoeste.
Aljustrel
28 km north on the N2 is the former mining town of Aljustrel also known for its lovely churches and an historic pillory (pelourinho) in the nearby parish of Messejana.

Getting to Castro Verde
Access to Castro Verde is convenient by road, as it lies along the IP2 and IC1 highways, approximately 190 kilometers south of Lisbon and 100 kilometers north of Faro, making it reachable by car or bus.
Train Travel in Portugal
The town is not connected by railway to Lisbon. Beja does have a railway station. The journey from Beja to Lisbon takes about 2 hours, 10 minutes.
Car Travel in Portugal
Castro Verde is on the IP2 southwest from Beja. From Faro take the A2 north - the journey is about 100 km.
Bus Travel in Portugal
Rede Expressos buses run from Faro to Castro Verde via Quarteira, Vilamoura and Albufeira. The journey is 2 hours, 15 minutes. Rede Expressos buses also connect Castro Verde to both Beja and Serpa. There are also local buses from Castro Verde south to Almodôvar.
