São Pedro de Alcântara Viewpoint, Lisbon (Miradouro de São Pedro de Alcântara)
Lisbon is a city built on many hills. As a result, it has several viewpoints (miradouro in Portuguese) with tremendous vistas over the capital.
The São Pedro de Alcântara viewpoint is one of the best with superb views from the Barrio Alto district over to Alfama and Lisbon Castle.
Also visible are the River Tejo, the Convento da Graça and the towers of São Vicente de Fora.
The viewpoint is located in a small urban park, the Jardim São Pedro de Alcântara (Jardim António Nobre).
The view is spectacular during the day and night when the city is illuminated below. Sunset is also another great time to visit.
The park serves also as a popular meeting place for friends about to embark on a night out in the bars, restaurants and Fado clubs of the Barrio Alto.
History
The Jardim São Pedro de Alcântara is also known as the Jardim António Nobre, named after the Porto-born Portuguese poet, António Nobre (1867-1900).
The park was built over part of the Águas Livres aqueduct in 1864. The space has a calçada pavement and is lined with statues of Greek gods and goddesses (such as Minerva and Odysseus) as well as a monument to Eduardo Coelho (1835-89), the founder of the Diário de Notícias newspaper and a famous Portuguese journalist.
The park also has an ornamental fountain (brought from the Bemposta Palace), benches to sit and relax and a cafe with outdoor seating.
An azulejos tile panel created by the Swiss artist Fred Kradolfer (1903-1968) in 1952 shows a map of the sights you can see from the viewpoint.
Access - Getting There
The easiest and most direct way to arrive is on the Glória Funicular from Praça dos Restauradores near Restauradores Station up the Calçada da Glória to the garden.
The Lisbon bus number #758 from Cais do Sodre passes the park as does one of Lisbon's iconic trams number #24 (Eléctrico 24).

The Convento de São Pedro de Alcântara is across the road from the park. It is a short walk along Rua Dom Pedro V past many bars and restaurants to Jardim do Príncipe Real, the Botanical Garden of Lisbon (Jardim Botânico de Lisboa) and the National Museum of Natural History and Science (Museu Nacional de História Natural e da Ciência).
The Casa de Sao Mamede Hotel in a restored 17th century building is a recommended place to stay nearby on the same street.
Walk down Rua de São Pedro de Alcântara to the Church of São Roque and the adjacent museum of São Roque.
