The Igreja de Sao Pedro, also known as the Church of Saint Peter, is a historic church located in the city of Funchal on the island of Madeira. The church is one of the oldest in the city and is a popular tourist attraction for its historic significance and beautiful architecture.
Inside, it has a single nave with three lateral chapels and two altars.

History
The church was begun in the 16th century in 1590 to be precise, during the early years of Portuguese colonization of Madeira. It was originally constructed in the Manueline style, a Portuguese architectural style that was popular during the Age of Discovery. The Manueline style is characterized by intricate stonework, sculptural details, and nautical motifs.
The church was finally completed only in the 18th century.


Architecture
Over the years, the church underwent several renovations and additions, including the construction of a bell tower in the 18th century. During the 20th century, the church underwent major renovations to restore it to its original beauty and historical significance.
Also of note are the 17th century azulejos covering the interior walls plus rich wooden funiture and paintings.
Today, the Igreja de Sao Pedro is an excellent example of Manueline architecture and is known for its ornate stonework, detailed sculptures, and beautiful stained glass windows. The church is open to visitors and is a must-see attraction for anyone interested in the history and architecture of Madeira.

Typically, the church is open to visitors from Monday to Saturday, from 9 am to 12 pm, and from 3 pm to 7 pm. On Sundays, the church is open from 9 am to 5 pm.
Regarding mass times, they may vary depending on the season and the liturgical calendar. However, typically the church offers Sunday Masses at 12.30 pm and 4 pm. Weekday Masses are usually held at 6.30 pm.
