Praça da Fruta de Caldas da Rainha
The Mercado de Rua Caldense, better known as the Praça da Fruta in Caldas da Rainha is a regular fruit and vegetable market with a long history.
Legend has it that the market was started by Queen Leonor but that is just legend.
It takes place in the center of this pleasant town in Praça da República.
History
The market dates back to 15th century and its growth was no doubt spurred by the people who came for the cure at the spa.
On sale are a variety of local agricultural products including fruit and vegetables, herbs, nuts, olive oil and local wines and cheeses.
The Saturday morning market is the busiest of the week.
There are also local markets in several nearby towns including Nazaré (daily except Monday), Óbidos on Saturdays, Alcobaça (weekly on Mondays) and a fish market in Peniche (daily except Mondays).
