Tuk-tuks in Lisbon

Lisbon Tuk-Tuks

Until recently more associated with the streets of Bangkok than Lisbon, tuk-tuks - motorized three wheelers - have now become a common sight on the narrow, twisting streets of the Portuguese capital. They have also divided opinion.

There are estimated to be around 500 tuk-tuks in Lisbon, most of them offering tours of the streets of Alfama, speeding through the narrow lanes to such sights as Lisbon Castle, the Sé (Lisbon Cathedral), Graça Viewpoint at the Igreja e Convento da Graça, São Vicente de Fora, the National Pantheon, Casa dos Bicos, Praça do Comercio, Jardim São Pedro de Alcântara and the Thieves' Market.

Some Lisboetas dislike the noise and the pollution these vehicles produce. Thus from 2017 all tuk-tuks must be electric and a recent law also bans them from the streets after 9 pm. They are particular unpopular with the city's taxi drivers who see them as a threat to their livelihood.

Various companies offer tuk-tuk tours taking in the city's main attractions.

These are priced at around 45-50 Euros for an hour with the driver acting as guide. As well as the popular Alfama tour, tuk-tuks also travel out to Belem and Belem Tower, the Monument of the Discoveries and Jeronimos Monastery as well as the Parque Das Nações, the Oceanarium and Lisbon Casino. You can also plan your own tour with many companies in vehicles that usually seat 3 or 6 passengers.
