Images of Portugal: Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Lagoa, Monsaraz, Alentejo

The Igreja Matriz (Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Lagoa) in Monsaraz was rebuilt after the 1755 Earthquake and again in the 19th century.
Within the fortress-like Romanesque church is a 14th-century marble tomb of the Knight Templar Gomes Martins Silvestre, the first mayor (alcaide) of the village, made in marble from nearby Estremoz and depicting his funeral procession. It was paid for by his son in 1341.
Outside is an 18th-century pillory or pelourinho topped with a Manueline astrolabe. This is also in fine Estremoz marble.
