Images of Portugal: Pink Street, Cais do Sodré, Lisbon
Pink Street in the once-gritty Cais do Sodré district of Lisbon was a redesign of Rua Nova do Carvalho in 2011. Once a den of inequity full of seedy bars and brothels catering to visiting sailors, it is now home to many of the area's trendiest bars and clubs. The street was painted pink and art installations and information boards created by the local architectural firm Jose Adrião Arquitectos.
Now pedestrianized, the street is lined with such watering holes as Pensão Amor, a former 18th century brothel now trendy bar with live concerts and erotic book store. Sol e Pesca was once a fishing tackle store now chic bar with indoor and outdoor seating. The old fishing gear now forms part of the decoration. Povo is a fado house for emerging talent with food options including petiscos and bacalhau.
Rua Nova do Carvalho (Calle Rosa) is just a three-minute walk north of Cais do Sodré Station. It is safe to walk both day and night.
