Praça de Bocage, Setúbal
The Praça de Bocage is the main square in Setúbal.
This elegant space is named after the poet, Manuel Bocage, a Neo-classical poet and dramatist, born in the city.
History
The square is just north of the River Sado and in times past was the location of a Roman fish salting factory, proved by later excavations of the area.
In the 15th and 16th centuries the space was known as Praça do Sapal.
The Igreja de São Julião (St. Julian's Church) on the edge of the square first dates from the 13th century but was rebuilt when a new square was laid out in the 18th century. It is the town's major church with some Manueline features remaining from the 16th century, though not of the same historical importance as the nearby Igreja de Jesus.
Architecture
A marble statue of the writer is the centerpiece of the square and was raised in 1871 from public subscription in Portugal and Brazil. The name of the square was also changed to Praça de Bocage.
The plaza also contains the impressive City Hall (Câmara Municipal de Setúbal), cooling fountains and acacia and jacaranda trees for needy shade in summer.
Several narrow streets branch off from the square housing a variety of shops including one or two selling ceramics and other local souvenirs.
Nearby
A short walk west of the square is the Casa da Baía, an 18th century building, and former refuge for orphans and widows, that has been completely restored. It serves now as a cafe, art space and center for local tourism promotion. To the south is a monument to Luísa Todi (1753-1833), a famous opera singer born in the city.
Other places of interest in Setúbal include the Casa de Bocage, the Igreja de Sãnta Maria, and the worthwhile Museu do Trabalho Michel Giacometti.
To get to Setúbal take a Fertagus Line from any of Roma-Areeiro, Entrecampos, Sete Rios or Campolide.
The square is a 20 minute walk from Setúbal Station.
