The Casa do Corpo Santo in Setúbal is an 18th century building with a museum of nautical instruments on the ground floor and a beautiful Baroque chapel on the second floor.

The building is also referred to as the Museu do Barroco (Baroque Museum), though this name is not on the most recent tourist maps of Setúbal.

The building was the headquarters of the Confraria dos Navegantes, the guild of seafarers, shipowners and fishermen in the town.

Chapel

An azulejos-lined staircase leads to the first floor chapel which is unlocked for you by the attendant.

Inside is a beautiful painted ceiling, gilded woodwork and more azulejos tiling.

The paintings that can be seen are of São Pedro Gonçalves, known as Corpo Santo, protector of fishermen, shipowners and navigators.

The most impressive ceiling paintings are in the Sala do Despacho (administrative office) where the guild would hold its meetings.

The tiles in the three upper rooms display scenes of every day life in particular hunting.
