Convento de São Domingos
The Convento de São Domingos in Guimarães is located close to Largo do Toural and the Museu da Sociedade Martins Sarmento. It is located just outside the UNESCO World Heritage area of this historic city.
History
The Dominican church and monastery has a long history dating back to the 14th century and before, though the present church has alterations and restorations made after that particularly in the 19th and 20th centuries. The initial construction of the church was financed by D. Lourenço Vicente, archbishop of Braga.
The church has elements of Romanesque, Gothic and Baroque architecture within its somewhat austere interior.
The cloister which now forms part of the Museu da Sociedade Martins Sarmento is particularly beautiful as is the organ.
After the dissolution of Portugal's monasteries, the church was used for a period by the military.
