The Torre do Relógio (Clock Tower) in Serpa an historic monument in this pretty town in Alentejo.
The tower is a vestige of the town's wall and the Alentejo region's Islamic past. The tower was turned into a clock in the year 1440, making it the third oldest clock tower in Portugal.
Close by is the Igeja Matriz (seen on the right in the image above and below). The church dates back to the 14th century and may have been built over a former mosque. It has three naves, a chancel dating from the 16th and 17th centuries and some exquisite gilded carving within.
