Arco Da Porta Nova, Braga

The ornate Arco Da Porta Nova in Braga is a surviving gate of the city's wall dating from 1773 near the Antigo Paço Episcopal.
The Rua Dom Diogo de Sousa runs through the arch towards Braga's Cathedral and the Igreja Misericórdia.
The pedestrianized street is lined with popular bars, restaurants and shops with outdoor seating in summer.

History
The Arco da Porta Nova was built in 1773 and has both Baroque & neoclassical elements in its architecture.
It was designed by architect André Soares (1720-1769) who also worked on the beautiful Mosteiro de Tibães, just outside the city, the Câmara Municipal de Braga (Town Hall) and the Church of Nosso Senhor dos Santos Passos in Guimarães.
The western façade is done in Baroque style while the opposite, eastern façade is neoclassical.

Access
The arch is a short walk from Braga Station and is close to the Museu dos Biscainhos and virtually next door to the Museu da Imagem, which occupies a 19th century building with a 14th century tower that was once part of the city's wall.
