Praça Luís de Camões, Vila Real

Praça Luís de Camões is a major square in Vila Real in northern Portugal.
The large square forms a roundabout for traffic and is bounded by the Palace of Justice building and the main Post Office.
The square is named after the famous Portuguese poet and writer Luis de Camões, author of Os Lusíadas.
The Fontanário Maria da Fonte has been moved down the street and now stands outside the cathedral (Igreja de São Domingos).
The Gothic Sé (cathedral) dates from the 15th century and was once part of a Dominican monastery.
Maria da Fonte was a historical figure associated with a popular uprising that occurred in the Minho region of northern Portugal between 1846-47. The events are known as the "Maria da Fonte Revolt". Maria da Fonte herself was not a central figure in the uprising; rather, she symbolized the common people who participated in the revolt.
