Statue of Augustus Caesar, Braga
The city of Braga in the Minho region of northern Portugal was once the Roman city of Bracara Augusta. It was founded by Augustus, Rome's first Emperor, in 16 BC after a campaign against local Celtic tribes. A polychrome statue now stands in the city to commemorate its Roman history. Originally Roman statuary was brightly painted and not pristine white marble as normally seen in museums around the world. The paint has simply worn off the statues over the years. Thus the statue, a copy of the famous Augustus of Prima Porta uncovered in 1863 and now in the Vatican Museums in Rome, has been reproduced in full color in Braga.
