Batalha Monastery (Mosteiro Santa Maria da Vitória) is in many ways the spiritual home of the Portuguese nation. Batalha Monastery was constructed to commemorate the Battle of Aljubarrota in 1385 and was the burial church of the Aviz dynasty of Portuguese kings.
The following monarchs are laid to rest here: John I of Portugal (João I), the founder of the monastery, buried with his wife Philippa of Lancaster; Edward of Portugal (Duarte I), the son of John I, buried with his wife Eleanor of Aragon; Alfonso V of Portugal (Afonso V):, the son of Edward, buried with his wife Isabella of Coimbra and John II of Portugal (João II) the son of Alfonso V. The monastery is a UNESCO World Heritage site and also houses the tombs of several princes, including Henry the Navigator.
