Portugal Images: Nazaré Lighthouse (Farol da Nazaré)
Constructed in 1903, the Nazaré Lighthouse is part of the Fort of São Miguel Arcanjo, perched above Praia do Norte in Nazaré, a beach renowned for the world's largest surfed waves. It is one of 30 lighthouses in mainland Portugal and over 50 in the country as a whole including Madeira and the Azores.
While the fort itself dates back to 1577, it wasn't until the early 20th century that the government added a lantern and a keeper's house to aid navigation and support local fishing along the Portuguese Atlantic coast.
