Portugal Images: Mercado Municipal de Santarém
The Mercado Municipal de Santarém (Municipal Market) in Santarém is a must visit as much for its delicious food as for its stunning azulejos tiles.
The 63 blue and white tile panels depict various agricultural scenes such as the wine harvest from the Ribatejo region as well as monuments in the city. The tiles were produced by the now defunct Fábrica de Sacavém.
The building itself dates from 1930 and is the work of architect Cassiano Branco. Some of Branco's other projects include the Coliseu do Porto, the Hotel Vitória and the Portugal dos Pequenitos theme park in Coimbra. It is open from Monday to Saturday; closed on Sunday.
