Forte de Santa Luzia Elvas

A life-size, uniformed mannequin stands guard at Forte de Santa Luzia south of Elvas Castle in the Alentejo region near the Spanish border.

The Forte de Santa Luzia was a key component of the city's extensive military fortifications. Constructed in the 17th century during the Portuguese Restoration War, the fort was designed to strengthen Elvas's defense against Spanish forces.

Positioned to the south of the city, the fort complements the larger Forte da Graça and Elvas Castle, creating a formidable network of defenses that safeguarded the strategically important border region. The Forte de Santa Luzia features a star-shaped layout typical of early modern military architecture, with thick ramparts, moats, and bastions built to withstand cannon fire.

The fort includes a central barracks and a chapel dedicated to Saint Lucy (hence the name). It is part of the UNESCO-listed Garrison Border Town of Elvas and its Fortifications.
