Elvas itself near the Spanish border, is world-renowned as a UNESCO World Heritage site featuring the largest system of bulwarked dry-ditch fortifications in the world. Nicknamed the "Queen of the Border," it served as a key defensive fortress for centuries, characterized by massive star-shaped walls, dramatic 17th-19th century forts, and the impressive 7 km 16th century Amoreira Aqueduct.

The landscape is dominated by the massive Forte de Nossa Senhora da Graça (a masterpiece of 18th-century military engineering) and the Fort of Santa Luzia, which contains a military museum.

The town of Elvas was also home to a large Jewish community, and visitors can explore the Casa da História Judaica (Jewish History Museum).
