Portugal Attractions: Domus Municipalis, Bragança
Within the historic walled citadel (Cidadela) in Bragança that includes Bragança Castle, its Military Museum (Museu Militar) and the nearby Iberian Museum of the Mask and the Costume (Museu Ibérico da Máscara e do Traje), is the Domus Municipalis, thought to be Portugal's oldest town hall, though it may have been built first as a water cistern.
History
The Romanesque, pentagonal Domus Municipalis is thought to date from the 15th century, though that is debated by historians.
The city council met in the impressive arcaded upper room with the cistern on the ground floor. The upper room has stone flags as seating running around the walls under the arched windows. On the walls are simple stone reliefs of the faces of men, plants and animals.
The whole building is constructed of granite with a tiled roof and can be entered through a small side door if it is open.
The 16th century to 18th century Igreja de Santa Maria stands nearby and is noted for the fine murals on its barrel-shaped ceiling.
There are a number of bars, cafes and restaurants within the Cidadela's walls which do good business throughout the day and night in the main tourist season in summer. It is slightly cooler up here with more chance of a pleasant breeze on hot summer's nights.
