History

The fountain was erected on the orders of Rodrigo de Moura Teles (1644-1728), an archbishop of Braga.

The six spouts of the fountain are in the shape of castles, hence the name. Beneath the spouts are a group of classical putti holding them up. The statue of the female figure is topped with an iron armillary sphere under a patriarchal cross.

The square backs on to the Archbishop's Palace, the rectory building of the University of Minho (Universidade do Minho) and the Braga Public Library and Municipal Archive.
