The Carro de Cesto, or basket toboggan, is a traditional mode of transportation unique to Funchal. Dating back to the mid-19th century, this distinct vehicle was originally used to transport residents down the steep hillsides of the Monte district. The Carro de Cesto consists of a wicker basket mounted on wooden runners, operated by two skilled drivers, known as carreiros, who guide the vehicle down the winding streets using their body weight and specially crafted rubber-soled shoes as brakes. The descent, covering approximately two kilometers, offers a thrilling ride and is a popular tourist attraction.
