Widows in Portugal traditionally wear black as a profound, long-term sign of mourning, respect, and love for their deceased husbands. This custom represents their loss outwardly, often lasting for the rest of their lives (In particlar among older generations), particularly in rural or conservative communities. The black of a widow's weeds serves as a visual signal of grief and social status.
