Estádio Francisco Lázaro, Lisbon
About 2.5 km west of the magnificent Estádio da Luz in Lisbon is the home of another Benfica. Not Sport Lisboa e Benfica, the club of Eusebio and other greats, but Clube Futebol Benfica.
Clube Futebol Benfica may claim to be actually older than their more famous neighbors having been founded in 1933 but with origins going back to 1895. Sport Lisboa e Benfica date from 1904.
Now playing in the lower echelons of the Portuguese football pyramid, the team's ground is the Estádio Francisco Lázaro, named after the Portuguese marathon runner, Francisco Lázaro, who died while running in the event at the 1912 Summer Olympics in Stockholm, Sweden.
The club has 3,500 members, with around 1,150 athletes participating in a variety of sports, including men's football, women's football, athletics, field hockey, indoor hockey, gymnastics, and swimming.
Getting to Estádio Francisco Lázaro
The compact stadium is located 8 km north west of Parque Eduardo VII. From here take a 711 or 746 bus. The 72B and 202 Lisbon buses also stop outside the ground. Santa Cruz - Damaia on the Azambuja and Sintra Line from Rossio Station is the nearest railway station. It is about 15 minutes on foot. The nearest Lisbon metro stations are either Reboleira or Colégio Militar/Luz (both a distant 25 minutes on foot).
Nearby is the pleasant Parque Silva Porto with a cafe, small lake, a children's park, Padel court and an Art Nouveau kiosk (now a public convenience).
