This photo shows the relaxed, residential houses of Alfama, the oldest district in Lisbon, Portugal's capital. In his book Queen of the Sea: A History of Lisbon, author Barry Hatton describes Alfama as a relic of the period before the 1755 Earthquake - "the medieval city preserved in miniature."
