Igreja de Jesus, Setubal, Portugal
The Igreja de Jesus in Setubal, a pleasant town south of Lisbon, is a major attraction.
Igreja de Jesus is a significant example of early Manueline architecture, marking a transition from Gothic to Renaissance styles in Portuguese church design. Built between 1490 and 1510 by architect Diogo Boitac, the church features distinctive ribbed vaults and intricately carved stone columns resembling twisted ropes, a hallmark of the Manueline style that reflects Portugal's maritime heritage. The church was commissioned by Justa Rodrigues Pereira, a noblewoman, and became part of the Monastery of Jesus. Its design set the stage for the development of the Manueline style across Portugal.
