The Ascensor da Bica, (now a National Monument), is one of the city's most famous funiculars, connecting the Rua de São Paulo to the Largo do Calhariz. Opened in 1892 and designed by Raoul Mesnier du Ponsard, the funicular was initially powered by water counterbalancing before transitioning to steam and later electricity. The Ascensor da Bica climbs one of Lisbon's steepest streets, offering scenic views of the city's narrow lanes and traditional buildings.
