Estádio EFAPEL Cidade de Coimbra is owned by Coimbra city and home to Associação Académica de Coimbra and their existing 14,000 capacity stadium was remodelled at a cost of US$40.2m. The stadium was sponsored by EFAPEL, a Portuguese industrial engineering company.
The new development around the stadium includes a swimming pool, a running track, a multiplex cinema and underground parking.
Coimbra stadium, designed by Portuguese architect António Monteiro, also hosts music concerts, both Madonna and U2 have performed here. The stadium is the home ground of Académica de Coimbra, who have yet to win the domestic Portuguese championship, but have played in European competitions on a few occasions.

The Estádio Municipal de Coimbra stadium is located 1.5 km east of the city centre. Take bus N7T from Coimbra A station or Nos 5, 7, 11 or 24 from Praça da República.
