Aveiro used to be home to SC Beira Mar, once a decent first or occasionally second division side in the Portuguese domestic league. The team fell on hard times and were demoted in 2015 to a regional league and does not use the new stadium.
The team reverted to playing its home matches at the 12,000 capacity Estádio Mario Duarte.
The brand new Estádio Municipal de Aveiro was purpose-built for the 2004 European Championships tournament. The US$39 million Estádio Municipal has a capacity of 30,000 and is the 5th largest stadium in Portugal.
The Estádio Municipal de Aveiro stadium was designed by Portuguese architect Tomás Taveira, who was also responsible for the stadium in Leiria. The stadium design is noted for its spectacular colors both on the outside and on the interior seating.
Due to the economic crisis in the Eurozone from 2008, such a large stadium became a drain on the resources of the local municipality.
Sport Clube Beira-Mar have won the Portuguese Cup and former great Eusebio spent one season with the team, but the squad have yet to win the domestic Portuguese championship, which is perennially dominated by Portugal's big three teams: Benfica, Porto and Sporting.
