Voltage

The standard voltage in Portugal is 230 V. The standard frequency is 50 Hz. This is similar to the electricity standard in other European countries including the UK, but different to the USA and Japan, for example, that use 120 V and 100 V respectively.

So electrical appliances from the UK will function in Portugal with the use of an adapter but a transformer would be necessary for appliances from countries such as Japan and the USA.

Most laptop computers are automatically multivoltage but would need an adapter if from countries using a different type of plug.

Plugs & Sockets

AC plugs and sockets in Portugal include Type C and Type F.

Type F is the Schuko plug with two round pins of 4.8 mm in diameter. The pins are 19 mm long and 19 mm apart. There are two contact areas at the top and bottom of the plug for earth.

Type C is similar but without the earth contacts.

The common Europlug fits this kind of socket.

Countries using Type C/F plugs include Albania, Angola (C only), Argentina (C and I), Austria, Belgium (C and E), Brazil (C and N), Bulgaria, Croatia, Finland, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, India (C, D & M), Indonesia, Iran, Israel, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Romania, Russia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey and Vietnam (A, B & C).
