Casa-Museu Dr. Anastácio Gonçalves
The Casa-Museu Dr. Anastácio Gonçalves is housed in the former residence of the Portuguese painter José Malhoa (1855-1933) in Lisbon close to the Picoas metro station.
History
Anastácio Gonçalves (1888-1965) was a noted ophthalmologist. He was a friend of many of the leading artistic and cultural figures of Portuguese life of his time including Calouste Gulbenkian, Ricardo Jorge, Aquilino Ribeiro and Ferreira de Castro.
Gonçalves' love of artistic collection supposedly dates from his friendship with Gulbenkian, whom he served as a physician in Paris.
The house dates from 1904 and contains Gonçalves' eclectic collection of Chinese porcelain from both the Song, Ming and Qing dynasties. In addition, the house contains a large display of Portuguese paintings by José Malhoa, Silva Porto, Joao Vaz, Antonio Ramalho, Carlos Reis, Mario Augusto and Marques de Oliveira.
Exhibits
The museum's collection also exhibits paintings by Ricardo Hogan, Francisco Vieira Lusitano and Domingos Antonio Sequeira.
The furniture within the gallery rooms is from Portugal, England, France, Holland and Spain.
There are also displays of Gonçalves' collections of bronzes, coins, faience, glass, jewellery, medals, Persian ceramics and textiles.
Casa-Museu Dr. Anastácio Gonçalves stages occasional temporary exhibitions.
The museum is quite small and you are kept under the watch of an attentive security guard as you pass through the various rooms of the house.
Leave any large bags at the reception.
