Elvas City Gate, Alto Alentejo, Portugal
Elvas in the Alto Alentejo region of Portugal has some of Europe's most impressive 17th century fortifications, built to defend Portugal from attack by Spain to the east. Here pictured is the Portas de Olivença. The gate was built during the reign of Dom Pedro II. The inscription reads that 'the gate is the entry point of so many Portuguese triumphs and spoils taken from the Spanish with the help of God and His Most Pure Mother'.
