Monument to the Restorers (Monumento aos Restauradores)
Monument to the Restorers (Monumento aos Restauradores) is located in the middle of Praça dos Restauradores in central Lisbon.
The monument commemorates victory in the Portuguese Restoration War that rumbled on intermittently between Spain and Portugal from 1640 to 1668. It ended with the end of Spanish rule over Portugal which had begun in 1581.
The restoration of Portuguese sovereignty over their own land is a major event in the history of the country.
Construction
The monument is made of limestone and was designed by António Tomás da Fonseca. It was erected in 1886 and stands 30 metres in height with the obelisk 14.6 metres. Money was raised by national subscription to pay for it.
The obelisk has various inscriptions relating to key events in the conflict including four major battles in the war.
There are two bronze figures representing Independence by Alberto Nunes and Victory by Simões de Almeida placed on the northern and southern sides of the monument.
Access
Praça dos Restauradores is close to both Restauradores Station and Rossio Station. The latter is a major transport hub for the Lisbon city bus, subway, taxi, and tram network.
Nearby
Restauradores Square is within walking distance of the Igreja de São Domingos, the Museu de São Roque and the Teatro Nacional D. Maria II.
The Ascensor da Glória, Palácio Foz, the Museu Nacional do Desporto (inside Palácio Foz) and the Jardim António Nobre are all close to the square and its monument.
